What’s a book or movie that genuinely scared you?
No book or movie comes to mind when I think about being scared.
What scares me is how easily people believe the bullshit they see on a screen or read on a page. They absorb somebody else’s story, repeat it, and eventually defend it like something they know from experience.
Somewhere along the way, they forget to ask: Is any of this actually true?
I enjoy a good movie. I can appreciate a book. But just because somebody wrote something, filmed it, or put a famous face behind it doesn’t mean I’m buying what they’re selling.
I want to ask questions. I want to know how they reached that conclusion. And I want room to disagree without being told there’s something wrong with me.
That goes for people I agree with, too. If I only question the things I don’t like, how much thinking am I really doing?
I’ve been wrong before. I’ll be wrong again. Thinking for yourself means being willing to admit that and change your mind when you have a reason.
But blindly following along because everybody else is doing it? Letting the crowd decide what you believe without ever stopping to examine it?
That scares the hell out of me.
Keep reading. Keep watching. Keep learning.
Just keep your own brain involved.
