I’d Give the Ticket Away

If you had a free round-trip ticket to anywhere, where would you go?

Honestly? I’d give it to my daughter.

There isn’t a destination that immediately comes to mind. No place where I think, “Wow, I’ve always wanted to go there.” Maybe I’m past that stage in my life. Maybe my idea of traveling has just changed. Either way, I’m good.

I still like going places. But give me a car, an open road, and the freedom to figure it out as I go. Let me stop somewhere because something caught my eye. Take a different route. Stay another day if I feel like it.

That’s my kind of travel. The drive is part of what I enjoy.

An airplane gets you there, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need. But a free ticket doesn’t suddenly give me a burning desire to fly halfway around the world.

My daughter has a whole world ahead of her. I’d rather let her pick somewhere she wants to discover. See something different. Have an experience of her own. I’d enjoy hearing where she chose and what she thought of it.

I don’t need to use the ticket just because somebody handed it to me. I’d be happy giving it to her.

She can choose the destination.

I’ll take the road.

I’d give my daughter the ticket and let her see the world. Give me the keys and the open road.
