The Worst Boat Ride of My Life

What’s the worst travel experience you’ve ever had?

I’ve done a fair amount of traveling over the years, but one experience stands out as probably the worst I’ve ever had.

I believe I was in the British Virgin Islands, traveling between islands on one of those smaller ferry boats that shuttle people back and forth.

Normally, that’s part of the adventure. You jump on a boat, enjoy the scenery, and head off to another island.

Not this time.

The water was unbelievably rough. I’m talking about waves so big that it felt like the boat was practically standing straight up at times.

It was absolutely insane.

People were getting sick, throwing up, holding on for dear life, and genuinely scared. You could feel the panic starting to set in.

And the craziest part?

The people operating the boat acted like it was just another day at the office.

I’m sure they were experienced and knew those waters, but I remember thinking, Why in the world did they even let this boat go out in these conditions?

There were moments when I seriously wondered how this whole thing was going to end.

I’ve been on plenty of boats in my life, but nothing even remotely compared to that ride.

Eventually, we made it to our destination, and everything was fine. But I’ll tell you one thing: I’ve never forgotten that experience.

Traveling is supposed to be about adventure, seeing new places, and making memories. Sometimes, though, the memories you make aren’t exactly the ones you signed up for.

Would I go back to the British Virgin Islands? Absolutely.

Would I get on that same ferry in those conditions again?

Not a chance.

Life by design. Not by default.
