It Started With Atari

What was your first ever videogame?

I have to think about that one. I’m pretty sure it was something on Atari. It might have been Pac-Man, but I honestly can’t remember. I remember the system better than I remember which game I played first.

Then, if I remember my own timeline right, Nintendo came next. That’s how I remember those early years of video games: Atari first, then Nintendo.

It’s an interesting question because it brings you back to something you probably haven’t thought about in years. At the time, nobody was keeping track of their first video game. You were just playing it. Now, decades later, somebody asks, and you’re trying to put the pieces together.

I was born in the late ’70s, so I’ve watched a lot of technology change throughout my life. Something that seemed impressive when we were kids looks pretty basic today. But that doesn’t take anything away from what it was like to experience it back then.

I wish I could give you the exact game, but I’d rather be honest than make up a clear memory I don’t have.

Atari, definitely. Pac-Man, maybe.

That’s my best answer. And I’m sure I’m not the only one trying to remember.

Atari, definitely. Pac-Man, maybe. A little trip back to where video games started for me.
