What are five simple exercises to do at home?
This one is easy for me. Push-ups are number one.
I’ve done push-ups every single day for over a decade. Simple. Wherever I am, whatever else is going on, that’s something I do.
Over that much time, an exercise becomes a habit. You stop spending time deciding whether you feel like doing it. It’s part of your day, like brushing your teeth.
When it comes to exercises you can do at home, there are plenty to choose from. These are my five.
1. Push-Ups
You need a little floor space, and you can get started.
Push-ups are my favorite because they’re always available. At home, on the road, wherever. You can adjust them to your ability, whether that means starting against a counter or doing regular push-ups on the floor.
For me, the biggest thing has been keeping the habit alive. Every day, for over ten years.
2. Pull-Ups
With a properly secured pull-up bar, you’ve got another great exercise right at home.
Pull-ups are challenging. Even a few controlled repetitions can take some effort. You can use assistance as you build up to them.
I like having something simple that makes you work. A bar and your own body weight will do that.
3. Burpees
Burpees will get your attention pretty quickly.
You squat down, put your hands on the floor, move your feet back, bring them forward, and stand up. You can add a push-up and a jump if you want to make them harder.
There’s room to adjust the movement, too. Stepping your feet back and forward is one way to start.
You don’t need much space, and you don’t need equipment.
4. Air Squats
Air squats are about as straightforward as it gets. Stand up, squat down, stand back up.
Take your time and use a range of motion you can control comfortably. Basic movements deserve attention, too.
If you want to turn things up later, there are jump squats. But regular air squats belong on this list all by themselves.
5. Sit-Ups
Another familiar exercise you can do on the floor at home.
Keep the movement controlled rather than rushing through repetitions or pulling on your neck. Pick a version that feels comfortable for you.
Simple doesn’t mean you have to fly through it. Give each repetition some attention.
Make It Something You Actually Do
There are plenty more: lunges, planks, jump squats, clap push-ups. You can keep adding to the list.
But these five give you somewhere to begin.
My experience with push-ups has taught me how much I value having a habit I can carry anywhere. I might be busy. My schedule might change. I can still find a little space and do my push-ups.
That’s the part I’m proud of. Over a decade of showing up for something simple.
Start with what you can do. Give it a place in your day. Then keep showing up.
