Today wasn’t really about replacing an alternator.
It was about taking care of someone who needed their car back on the road.
A young guy was referred to me by someone from the cigar lounge. His 2013 Cadillac CTS wasn’t charging, and before replacing anything, I verified the diagnosis. The charging system was only producing 11.7 volts. A quality replacement alternator fixed the problem, and after the repair, it was charging at 14.2 volts.
That could have been the end of the story.
Instead, while I already had everything apart, I noticed the throttle body was coated in carbon buildup. It wasn’t part of the job, and he didn’t ask me to clean it. I spent a few extra minutes cleaning it anyway because I wanted to hand the car back a little better than I found it.
A little while later, he sent me a message:
“The car’s running way better.”
That’s the kind of feedback you never forget.
I’ve always believed that reputation is built one customer at a time. You don’t earn referrals by rushing through a repair. You earn them by diagnosing correctly, taking pride in your work, communicating honestly, and doing the little things that most people overlook.
One happy customer turns into another phone call.
One phone call turns into another opportunity.
One opportunity turns into another story.
Today’s repair also reminded me of something else. Every real repair is more than just a paycheck. It’s experience, content, marketing, and another chance to build trust.
That’s the business I’m interested in building.
Not just fixing cars.
Building a reputation.
