The Most Valuable Thing I’ve Built Isn’t a Business

I’ve built dealerships.

I’ve financed cars.

I’ve bought real estate.

I’ve flipped thousands of vehicles.

I’ve signed contracts, hired employees, made payroll, collected payments, and spent decades building businesses.

And I’m proud of all of it.

But lately, I’ve realized something.

The most valuable thing I’ve ever built isn’t a business.

It’s a library.

Not a building full of books.

A library of moments.

A library of stories.

A library of memories.

For most of human history, people disappeared.

A few photographs survived.

Maybe a handwritten letter.

A couple stories passed down through family members.

Then time moved on.

My grandfather didn’t leave behind hundreds of videos.

He didn’t leave behind thousands of photographs.

He didn’t leave behind recordings of his voice, his opinions, his laughter, or the way he saw the world.

Most people from his generation didn’t.

Today is different.

As I write this, there are hundreds of videos documenting my life.

There are photographs.

Blog posts.

Conversations.

Projects.

Successes.

Failures.

Lessons.

Thoughts that would have disappeared forever just a generation ago.

One day my daughter will be able to go back and see who I really was.

Not who people said I was.

Not who she vaguely remembers.

Who I actually was.

What I believed.

How I talked.

What I laughed about.

What mattered to me.

The crazy part is that we’re the first generation in history with this opportunity.

Most people are using technology to scroll.

I’m becoming more interested in using it to preserve.

To document.

To leave something behind.

Because one day, none of the cars will matter.

The deals won’t matter.

The houses won’t matter.

Even the money won’t matter.

What will matter is that somebody can still hear your voice.

Somebody can still see your face.

Somebody can still learn from your experiences.

Somebody can still feel connected to you long after you’re gone.

That’s not a business.

That’s a legacy.

And the more I think about it, the more I realize that might be the most valuable thing I’ve ever built.

380+ videos. 30+ blog posts. Still building the library

Someday the cars will be gone. The buildings will be gone. The videos, stories, and memories might be what remains.
